Attorney | Data Privacy and Governance | 147518 | New York, NY
A leading global law firm with strong New York roots is seeking a dedicated Data Privacy and Information Governance Officer to join its Office of General Counsel. This is a unique opportunity to lead and advance firm-wide data privacy and information governance efforts across U.S. and international offices. The role reports to the Deputy General Counsel and Chief Information Officer and involves close collaboration with legal, administrative, and technology teams.
Key Responsibilities
Data Privacy
- Advise on global data privacy laws (e.g., GDPR, UK GDPR, HIPAA, CCPA) and monitor regulatory developments.
- Lead the firm’s data privacy compliance programs and processes across jurisdictions.
- Conduct privacy and transfer impact assessments; manage responses to data subject requests.
- Draft, review, and negotiate data processing agreements and Standard Contractual Clauses.
- Collaborate with DPOs and support incident response and breach notification processes.
- Update firm policies, provide legal guidance on related operations, and deliver staff training.
Information Governance
- Develop and implement firm-wide governance policies for client and administrative data.
- Oversee digital and hard copy records management, including retention and destruction protocols.
- Partner with IT and Records Services to integrate governance with SaaS and AI tools.
- Lead efforts to promote electronic recordkeeping and update document retention guidelines.
- Supervise file transfers for lateral hires and ensure compliance for departing personnel.
Candidate Qualifications
Required:
- J.D. from an accredited law school (NY or CA bar admission) or solicitor qualification if in London.
- Minimum of 7 years’ experience in data privacy and information governance.
- Strong knowledge of global privacy laws and compliance programs.
- Proven project management and change leadership abilities.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and presentation skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments.
Preferred:
- Prior experience in a law firm setting.
- CIPP certification.
- Familiarity with Microsoft M365 and enterprise document management systems.
- Experience leading global initiatives and change management projects.
